He Says…
I often include a He Says paragraph at the end of my blogposts.
These come from my frequent practice of Two Way Prayer. This discipline has taken my walk with Jesus to new heights. I’d like to introduce it to you!
Before you get started, you will want to gather up a few tools.
You Will Need:
- A Bible
- A Notebook or journal
- A pen or pencil
- A quiet place
- 10-15 minutes per session
- A willingness to try something new
Where To Begin
- I learned how to begin on the TwoWayPrayer.org website. The site is vast, so I recommend starting with the quick links I have provided below.
- This site was initially developed for those seeking recovery, thus you will see use of the term “Higher Power” in some of their literature. You and I know this to be GOD.
How to Practice – Videos
Click here to view two 1-minute videos on how to practice Two Way Prayer, along with some brief instructions.
- For more encouragement, be sure to check out the Experiences videos at the bottom of their webpage. You will watch someone try Two Way Prayer for the first time, and you will also hear some incredible testimonies of what God has done for some through regular application of this discipline.
How to Practice – A Written Guide
Click here for a wonderful guide from TwoWayPrayer.org entitled, “How to Listen to God,” by John Batterson. This explains the process in detail. Lots of great encouragement here for those just starting, so it’s well worth the read.
Tips From My Personal Experience
Note: This section will make more sense after you view one of the links above.
- Some listeners begin by asking God a question. I prefer to use scripture as a launching point, so I typically select a passage and write it in my journal. Sometimes I journal my thoughts about it, sometimes I don’t. (How I select my passage: I either use one I recently read in a quiet time, or I open my Bible and select a passage that way). There is no right or wrong way to hear from God, so do it in the way that works best for you.
- When you begin writing, start with a term of endearment such as: Child, Daughter, Woman of God, or whatever term you feel led to use that day.
- Don’t overthink it. If you are thinking too much, stop and still your mind, ask Jesus to quiet you, re-read your scripture or question, and try again.
- Write whatever comes into your mind without questioning whether it is right or wrong. You will read it again and weigh this out later.
- Cast down doubt. You may fear that you cannot do this, but you CAN!
- When you are finished writing, it’s important to follow the Two Way Prayer guideline of now evaluating what you wrote by asking: is it honest, unselfish, loving, and pure? Cross out whatever doesn’t meet that criteria.
- If you feel God is asking you to act on something (changing an attitude, praying about something, or actively doing something), be sure to take that next step. Your obedience is what will strengthen your faith and deepen your walk.
- Don’t give up quickly. It may feel intimidating or unnatural at first. That’s why the Two Way Prayer website encourages you to try this for 30 days. There is a marked difference between how you will feel on Day 1 and how you will feel on day 30!
- Consider finding a Two Way Prayer partner; someone you trust that you can text or email your prayers to, and they can do the same for you. This will help keep you encouraged, accountable, and consistent.
- Pay it forward. I found Two Way Prayer because a dear friend shared her experience with me. Don’t be afraid to share with others what God is doing in you. All of us know people who would greatly benefit from growing through this practice.
- Go for it – you’ve got this, my friend!
