Years ago, I had a season when God showed up and held me close.
It was during those awful months when the ring came off, and the unworn wedding gown was moved to the recesses of my closet.
And when tears were more plentiful than smiles.
Then there was that lovely spring day. The day I had gone to the park to seek God alone. Feeling desperate, I cried out to him with so many questions.
And then God did something I will never forget.
He offered a word of comfort that that has stayed with me since.
Nestled into a passage of scripture, was this message:
In a season when someone else had decided I wasn’t enough, I was floored to hear God tell me that not only did he love me, he DELIGHTED in me.
I was reminded that I am God’s absolute treasure.
As are you.
To delight in something is to know joy.
There are a lot of things in this world that bring us joy, which is truly wonderful.
But then there are those things, and those people, that make the top of our list. Those special things and special ones that we adore the most.
These are what delight our souls.
To delight in something, or someone, is wonderful, multiplied. It’s a greater, deeper, more satisfying kind of joy.
God’s delight in us is mentioned in his Word many times.
… for the LORD will take delight in you… as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you. – Isaiah 62:4-5
This is the promise God gave me that day at the park. For a girl who had just lost her guy, questioning if she would ever meet Mr. Right, this scripture was a much-needed gift from a loving God.
And in case you were wondering, I did meet Mr. Right, less than one year later.
There are other scriptural references to God’s delight in us, just to make sure we don’t forget that we truly are adored.
Like this one:
The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; …he will rejoice over you with singing. – Zephaniah 3:17
And like this:
The LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love. – Psalm 147:11
In a world where nothing is certain, and sometimes God feels far away, to know and understand that he sees us this way brings comfort, hope, and joy to the soul.
So let this be a reminder to you on those days when others don’t seem to feel you are good enough, or when YOU don’t feel you are good enough, or when life has dealt another hard blow.
Take a moment to sit with your Bible and drink in his words, and remind yourself that no matter what, God delights in YOU.
Listen to him tenderly whisper these words:
